Ivan Yang of Fresno, Elected to Phi Beta Kappa at Colby College

2017 May 2

Ivan Yang of Fresno, a member of Colby's Class of 2017, was elected to membership in Phi Beta Kappa this spring. Membership in the society is one of the highest academic honors an undergraduate student can achieve.

Yang, who is majoring in biology, was one of 49 students inducted into Phi Beta Kappa at Colby. A graduate of University High School, he is the son of Xiaoming Yang and Kunbo Zhang of Fresno, Calif.

The Phi Beta Kappa society, founded in 1776, restricts its chapters to leading colleges and universities. The Beta Chapter of Maine was organized at Colby in 1895.

Founded in 1813, Colby is one of America's most selective colleges and the first previously all-male college in New England to admit women. Serving only undergraduates, Colby offers a rigorous academic program and a rich global experience rooted in deep exploration of ideas. Through close interaction with world-class faculty scholars, students pursue intellectual passions, choosing among 58 majors or developing their own. Independent and collaborative research, study abroad, and internships offer robust opportunities to prepare students for postgraduate success. Colby is home to a community of 2,000 dedicated and diverse students from around the globe. Its Maine location provides easy access to world-class research institutions and civic engagement experiences.
